How to get to Covilhã

FROM LISBON

By train

At the airport, follow the signs to the metro station and take the Red Line towards “S. Sebastião” direction. Leave the metro train at “Oriente” (approx. 10 min. journey), where the “Gare do Oriente” railway station is located. For tickets and prices, please visit Metropolitano de Lisboa.

At the “Gare do Oriente”, buy a train ticket to Covilhã (approx. 3:30 h journey). Choose an “Intercidades” type of train. For reservations, information on train timetables and ticket prices (approx. 18 €), please visit CP – Comboios de Portugal

By bus

You will need to catch a taxi to “Sete Rios” Bus Station. The journey should take approximately 10 minutes. You can also go by metro, take the Red Line and leave at “São Sebastião” (11 stops), change to metro Blue line towards “Reboleira” direction and leave at the 2nd stop (“Jardim zoológico”). Take the directions to the bus terminal. Express buses to Covilhã (direction “Guarda”) run every hour, the journey should take about 3:25h. Check here to the Rede Expressos timetable and prices (approx. 16,5 €). At “Gare do Oriente” you can also take the bus, with Flixbus,  however at a lower frequency .

Traveling by car

You can find several rent-a-car stands at Lisbon airport. Please ask for information at the rent-a-car stand concerning payment of motorway and highway tolls. Leaving from Lisbon Airport, follow the indications to the A1 Motorway towards Porto, exit to A23 motorway direction Abrantes/Castelo Branco (A23 goes from Torres Novas to Guarda through Covilhã), and leave at the 30th A23 exit to Covilhã (approx. 2:45h, 273 Km).

 

FROM OPORTO

By train

Very long trip, not recommended.

By bus

At the airport, follow the signs to the light-rail station “Metro do Porto” and take the E line (Violet) light-rail train towards “Estádio do Dragão”. Leave the light-rail train at “24 de Agosto” Stop (30 minutes). For tickets and prices, please visit Metro do Porto. From there, walk to the Bus Station “Terminal Rodoviário”, Street: “Campo 24 de Agosto, n.º 125” (2 minutes). Express buses to Covilhã run every two hours, the journey should take about 3:30h. Check here  to the Rede  Expressos timetable  and prices (approx. 17,5 €).

Traveling by car

At Porto airport there are several rent-a-car stands. Please ask for information at the rent-a-car stand concerning payment of motorway and highway tolls. Leaving from Porto Airport, follow the indications to the A1 Motorway towards Lisbon, leave at the exit 16 to A25 motorway direction Viseu (A25 goes from Aveiro to Vilar Formoso), leave at exit 30 to A23 motorway direction Covilhã/Portalegre, then exit in Covilhã (approx.2:45h, 258 Km).

URBAN MOBILITY

For those visiting the city without their own car, the best solution to get from one place to another is by feet (Visit Covilhã) or to use a taxi or an Uber. There are several places where you can take a taxi: In the city center; Largo da Estação;  Next to Cova da Beira Hospital; Next to the Court; Next to the Bus terminal.
